In the heart of Baltimore County, the Catonsville Center for Alternative Studies serves a unique and important role within Baltimore County Public Schools. Designed as an alternative learning environment, the school supports students who are temporarily placed outside of traditional high schools to strengthen academic performance, build positive habits, and develop interpersonal skills necessary for long-term success.
Students typically attend the program for two to three quarters before transitioning back to their home schools, making their time at Catonsville both critical and transformative.
As part of that experience, the school emphasizes hands-on learning and exposure to new opportunities. Weekly field trips are a cornerstone of the program, offering students a chance to engage with the world beyond the classroom. One of their most popular destinations has been Topgolf, where students are introduced to the game in a fun, accessible setting.
But until recently, opportunities to pursue that interest further, onto a real course, were limited.
After learning about the program’s goals and the proximity of a golf course located just behind the school, Drive Fore The Future partnered with Catonsville Center for Alternative Studies to bring the game directly to students in a more meaningful way. The donation included:
The response from the school community was immediate and powerful.
“We received the shipment, and I must say, the entire campus was absolutely blown away by your generosity. The impact of your contribution is already being felt, and we are truly thankful for your support,” said Assistant Principal Alonzo Ellison.
With this equipment, students now have the ability to move beyond introductory experiences and step onto a driving range, or even an executive course, for the first time. What was once an occasional activity can now become a structured, skill-building opportunity.
The impact of this support becomes even more meaningful when viewed in the context of the surrounding community. Baltimore County Public Schools serves a diverse student population, with many families facing economic challenges.
For students at Catonsville Center for Alternative Studies, many of whom are navigating additional academic or behavioral challenges, access to activities like golf can be especially impactful. The sport introduces not only physical skill development, but also patience, accountability, and self-discipline.
In his application for support, Ellison shared a clear vision: to take students beyond simulated experiences and give them access to real courses, real practice, and real growth opportunities.
Now, with the support of Drive Fore The Future, that vision is becoming reality.
Students who once only experienced golf through occasional visits to Topgolf can now step onto a course just steps from their school. They can learn the fundamentals, practice consistently, and begin to see themselves in a sport that may have once felt out of reach.
More importantly, they gain exposure to an environment that reinforces focus, respect, and perseverance - skills that extend far beyond the fairway.
The partnership between Catonsville Center for Alternative Studies and Drive Fore The Future is a reminder that access matters. When students are given the tools, the space, and the opportunity to try something new, the results can be lasting.
As these students continue their journeys, both back to their home schools and beyond, the lessons learned through experiences like this will travel with them.
Because sometimes, the right opportunity at the right moment can change more than just a game, it can change a path forward.
