Mancelona High School’s golf program is entering an exciting new chapter, and we’re proud to be part of it. Drive Fore The Future recently partnered with the school to support the continued growth and development of its team. The request came from Coach Colby Squires, who was recently hired and is eager to build on the foundation that’s already in place. “We have a fantastic group of young, enthusiastic golfers, most of whom are completely new to the sport,” he shared. “While we did have some clubs and bags available, many were very old, in poor condition, or incomplete.” Thanks to support from local community members, the school had received a few donated sets to help them get started. However, as Coach Squires noted, they are still working toward a long-term goal of ensuring every student has access to what they need to participate fully and confidently.
To support their efforts, Drive Fore The Future provided each player with a new polo and quarter-zip, along with 24 dozen golf balls for practice and play. These essentials help level the playing field and ensure the team can take the course with a sense of pride and preparation. It’s a small but important step toward creating a program that is inclusive, sustainable, and impactful.
At Mancelona High School, approximately 73% of students are considered economically disadvantaged, and about 70% qualify for free lunch. These numbers reflect a community where families often face tough financial trade-offs, making access to extracurricular activities like golf more difficult.
Despite these obstacles, the team at Mancelona is committed to creating opportunities for their students to grow both on and off the course. “Our program is not only introducing young athletes to golf but also fostering valuable life skills such as discipline, teamwork, and perseverance,” Coach Squires said. Golf can offer more than just athletic development—it teaches focus, builds character, and can even lead to future scholarships or mentorship opportunities.
