In 2024, McCluer South-Berkeley High School in Ferguson, Missouri, launched its first-ever girls golf team—a major milestone in a community where opportunities in the sport have historically been out of reach. What began with just two determined players has grown into a team of five heading into the 2025 fall season. And with a dedicated coach and parent, Chris Williams, leading the charge, the school is now setting its sights on building a boys team by the 2026–2027 school year.
Coach Williams reached out to Drive Fore the Future in hopes of giving these student-athletes a stronger foundation—one that didn’t rely solely on Facebook Marketplace finds and borrowed equipment. The school’s players come from a wide range of social and economic backgrounds, but one thing unites them: a strong work ethic and a willingness to commit to something new.
McCluer South-Berkeley operates in a district facing real financial challenges. Over 90% of its students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and resources for athletics are often limited or stretched thin. Reliable transportation remains a barrier—the team’s home course is 20 minutes away, and bus availability is inconsistent. Still, these students show up, ready to compete, and ready to grow.
Their school is known for its high academic standards, and the coaching staff is equally committed to excellence on the course. By offering year-round instruction and support, they hope to break the pattern of one-year players and instead build a sustainable, lasting program.
To help give the program a real chance, Drive Fore the Future provided 12 full sets of men's and women's clubs with bags, 24 dozen golf balls, a launch monitor for off-season training, Dunning polos and quarter zips, and a shipment of practice gear. Our hope is that with the right tools in place, both the current girls team and a future boys team will have what they need to truly compete—and feel like they belong.
We’re proud to support McCluer South-Berkeley and look forward to watching this program grow. Their players may be new to the game, but they’re showing up with grit, determination, and heart. That’s the kind of team worth backing.
